Peckham Library

Peckham Library

The public library at Peckham is part of a concerted programme of regeneration and community growth.
About
Peckham Library is a dynamic community hub located in Peckham, southeast London, United Kingdom. Renowned for its playful design and strong social engagement, it serves as both a library and a community building.

History
This beloved building has had a profound impact on the people of Peckham. In the 1990s, Peckham was one of the most deprived areas in the UK, grappling with high unemployment and GCSE pass rates significantly below the national average. The arrival of Peckham Library marked a turning point for the community, providing an educational venue for local residents. It offers free access to reading materials, the internet, and computer facilities, expanding learning opportunities for many.

Architecture
The library was designed by Will Alsop of Alsop & Stormer and won Britain’s prestigious Stirling Prize for architecture in November 2000. Its design is both bold and thoughtfully crafted, prioritizing the needs and experiences of its users.

Awards
2002 Civic Trust Award
